Bryan is a graduate in medicine from the University of Queensland. After graduating, he moved to Perth where he obtained a BA (Hons) degree in philosophy from the University of Western Australia. He then undertook specialist training in psychiatry and in 1991 joined The Park Centre for Mental Health Treatment, Research and Education (formerly Wolston Park Hospital). Bryan is Executive Director of the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research at the Park, and Director of its Genetics Research program. Both clinician and researcher, he is a Professor of Psychiatry, University of Queensland, and an Honorary Principal Research Fellow at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. Bryan's research program is focused on the molecular genetics of schizophrenia, and he holds a MD degree (University of Queensland) in this field. With national and international collaborators, his studies seek to identify genetic factors predisposing to schizophrenia. He is the recipient of grants from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the United States National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
